Tips for a Weekend Getaway to Montreal
1. Check the Event Calendar
Do your research. We visited Montreal during Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day; only to find out that almost everything was closed on that Saturday. Before you plan your weekend getaway, check this link to find out about any events or holidays. The city is very lively and there is always a lot happening, so research and plan accordingly. Don’t make the same mistake we did.
2. Rent an Airbnb
The Airbnb we stayed at was as good, if not better, than a hotel in downtown Montreal. We had a full apartment that included a pool, gym and sauna. If you have been reading my blogs, you know I am a big advocate for Airbnb. I am not a sponsor for Airbnb- but I can’t look past the flexibility and options they provide. Especially since I love to fully submerge myself in the local living while traveling.
3. Make Restaurants Reservations in Advance
Montreal has become a culinary hub with an amazing variety of flavors. There were so many restaurants we wanted to try, only to find out that we needed reservations in advance. Try to book your restaurant reservations in advance so you don’t miss a great meal.
4. Check Out “The Underground City”
Ok, so as a declaimer, this place was almost impossible to find. Very confusing to get there, but I guess getting lost is part of the experience. Built in 1960, “The Underground City” was constructed to avoid the cruel winters. It is composed of a network of tunnels, corridors and plazas; that connect people to over 1,000 retailers, restaurants, and residential complexes. The best way to get there is to go to Maritime Plaza, located on René-Lévesque Blvd and Guy St. There will be a metro entrance there, go downstairs and explore!
5. Bring Back ICE Wine
Someone had mentioned that this wine was good and only sold in Canada. I decided to buy three bottles and they were so delicious! I am disappointed that I only brought three bottles. I might have to go back to Canada to get some more. If you are a wine snob, do yourself a favor a bring back some ICE wine.
